YFS of ADI Sickle Cell Blood Drive

YFS of ADI needs your help in saving the lives of our community members. This Saturday, July 18, 2009, as part of YFS Weekend, we'll hold a sickle cell blood drive to raise awareness about

From left to right: erythrocyte, thrombocyte, ...Image via Wikipedia

this debilitating blood disorder and its disproportionate affect on the Black community.

90% of all children born with sickle cell are of African descent. Individuals with sickle cell, which mutates one's red blood cells, are in constant need of blood transfusions.
You can help by donating one pint of blood this Saturday.

It only takes an hour (giving blood is 10 minutes or less). It won't cost you anything, and you can rest assured that you'll be helping someone, possibly a member of your community, live one day longer.

Saturday, July 18, 2009
Bright Hope Baptist Church
(Located at 13th & Cecil B. Moore)
9:30am-2pm

Make your appointment today by clicking on this link

*If you have concerns about your eligibility as a donor, please see Myths About Giving Blood.

Not that you need an incentive to save someone's life by simply donating a pint of blood, but in case you do, the American Red Cross is raffling a weekend getaway and $2,500 in free gas to any person who donates blood between July 6 and Sept 20. Please see the American Red Cross's Summer Promotion for more details.

AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS ARE NOT APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

Even if you do not have a college-aged child at home, please share this with someone who does, pass this scholarship information on to anyone and everyone that comes to mind. Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have donated moneys for scholarship use

to African Americans, a great deal of the money is being returned because of a lack of interest.

No one is going to knock on our doors and ask if we can use a scholarship.

Take the initiative to get your children involved. There is no need for money to be returned to donating companies because we fail to apply for it.

Please pass this information on to family members, nieces, nephews, and friends with children etc. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are a college student or getting ready to become one, you probably already know how useful additional money can be.
Our youth really could use these scholarships. Thanks!!

NIH Summer Institute on Community-Based Participatory Research

The National Institutes of Health has announced the 2nd summer institute. We are thrilled to see that the organizers have responded to Community-Campus Partnerships for Health’s (CCPH) comments on last year's summer institute.

When the 1st NIH institute on CBPR was announced, CCPH expressed concern about its exclusive focus on academic researchers.

In CBPR, the community is involved at the very start of the research, so it was incongruent that the institute did not include the community partners or acknowledge the possibility of a community partner as a principal investigator or co-PI.

This summer's institute has been designed for community-academic partner teams (see below for details).

CCPH has successfully implemented community-academic partner team-based model of CBPR training:

The training curriculum, "Developing and Sustaining CBPR Partnerships" is available online at www.cbprcurriculum.info.

rship Grants Programs

Deadline: October 15, 2009

The NEA Foundation (http://www.neafoundation.org/) supports a variety of efforts by teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to improve student learning in public schools, colleges, and universities across the United States.

The foundation is accepting applications for the following grant programs:
The Learning & Leadership Grants program provides opportunities for teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to engage in high-quality professional development and lead their colleagues in professional growth. Grants to individuals fund participation in professional development experiences such as summer institutes and action research. Grants to groups fund collegial study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, and mentoring experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment. The grant amount is $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups.

The Student Achievement Grants program provides grants of $5,000 each to improve the academic achievement of students by engaging in
critical thinking and problem solving that deepen knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The work should also improve students’ habits of inquiry, self-directed learning, and critical reflection. Proposals for work resulting in low-income and minority student success with honors, advanced placement, and other challenging curricula are particularly encouraged. Grant funds may be used for resource materials, supplies, equipment, transportation, software, and scholars-in-residence.
Applicants must be practicing U.S. public school teachers in grades K-12, public school education support professionals, or faculty and staff at public higher education institutions.

Volunteer with Philabundance Fresh for All

Description unavailableImage by HaoJan via Flickr

You recycle out the wazoo and consider yourself consigliore of the enviro-sack mafia.

Hence, a cause you can believe in: Philabundance wants to fill those ubiquitous bags with produce through its new Fresh for All program.

And you can help by volunteering.

The nonprofit hands out perishables at six sites in the Delaware Valley — where nutritious diet staples are hard to come by, especially in tough times.

With a minimum three-hour commitment, you’ll keep busy.

Help with admin, approve clients, or do community outreach (posting mailings, making phone calls).

Looking for something physical?
Take food to sites, divide apples, and dole out the goods.
You’ll be doing a major part to help people get the fruits and veggies they need.
And that’s a green movement to be proud of.

To participate in Fresh for All, contact
Tunisia Garnett (215-339-0900 ext. 238 or tgarnett@philabundance.org).

Food Focus: Fruit

A healthy lifestyle is the key to longevity, optimum weight, abundant energy and balance.
By using fruit to satisfy our taste for sweetness, we can leave behind the use of chemical,

mango dreamImage by realSMILEY via Flickr

processed and refined sweeteners. Fruits are easy to digest, are cleansing and cooling and are great for those who are overstressed and overheated from excessive mental strain or hot climates.

Fruits are filled with fiber and liver stimulants, which act as natural, gentle laxatives. Whenever possible, buy fresh, locally grown fruit as opposed to imported fruits shipped from far-off places. This keeps you eating in season, and more in harmony with your environment and climate.

Eating raw fruit in summer months is highly cooling, while baking it in the winter months neutralizes the cooling effect.

Fruit in the form of juice is a great choice for cleansing the body, but be aware that juice rapidly raises blood sugar levels, leading to an energy crash soon after.

Frozen, whole, puréed or juiced fruit can make great summertime cool-down treats.

Try frozen grapes, banana-coconut smoothie popsicles or lime juice ice-cubes in iced tea!

Whether you are having fresh fruit for a light early morning breakfast, a midday snack or evening treat, enjoy nature's sweetness and whenever possible buy organic. Here are a few summer fruits and their health benefits:

Great for lung conditions and asthma; used to help treat anemia due to their high copper and cobalt content.

Bananas: Help to lubricate the intestines, treat ulcers, detoxify the body and manage sugar cravings; are rich in potassium (which helps hypertension).
Cherries: Slightly warming in nature; increase overall body energy, remedy arthritis and rheumatism and are rich in iron, which improves the blood.
Grapefruits: Treat poor digestion, increase appetite during pregnancy, alleviate intestinal gas and reduce mucus conditions of the lungs.
Papayas: Tone the stomach, act as digestive aid, moisten the lungs and alleviate coughing; contain carpaine, an anti-tumor compound.
Raspberries: Benefit the liver and kidneys, cleanse blood of toxins, regulate menstrual cycles, treat anemia and can promote labor at childbirth.

Philadelphia's clean energy economy to guide Sen. Arlen Specter

PHILADELPHIA - FEBRUARY 27: Sen. Arlen Specte...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Can you help show Philadelphia's clean energy economy to Sen. Arlen Specter?

Sen. Specter has an important role in passing a strong clean energy jobs bill that's moving through Congress right now—but Big Oil and Coal are lobbying hard to water it down. So he needs to hear from local constituents who demand bold investments to seize the clean energy opportunity.

That's why MoveOn members have spent weeks organizing a Clean Energy Jobs Day—a unique tour of local clean energy businesses, from solar panel installers to retrofitted car plants. Local residents and media will be there and we've even invited Sen. Specter—and we need a good crowd to show how many people in Philadelphia support a clean energy economy.

Will you attend the tour on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 9:00 AM?

Yes, I'll be there.

The goal of the Clean Energy Jobs Day is to show Sen. Specter and the media that there's deep grassroots support in Pennsylvania for clean energy jobs legislation.

But it'll also just be interesting and fun to see what's happening in your community. Local MoveOn members have put a lot of time into organizing this event, and we're hearing great stories from around the country about what's planned. Here are just a few examples:

* In Boulder, Colorado, local solar systems manufacturers are mounting interactive displays for kids to use and learn about solar panels.
* In Asheville, North Carolina, high school students are coming to represent future employees in the clean energy industry.
* In Philadelphia, a car-sharing company will provide free rides from site to site.
* In Rockford, Illinois, "tour guides" wearing green shirts will lead bikers through the stops on the tour.

What else will you find when you come to your local Clean Energy Jobs Day? We'd love for you to see for yourself—and we need your presence to help send a strong message to Sen. Specter about the depth of support for clean energy jobs.

Can you come on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 9:00 AM? RSVP for Philadelphia's Clean Energy rally
